Allen Memorial Planetarium - 3737 S. Seventh Street. Planetarium: (812) 462-4272. Stardate Hotline: (812) 462-4074. E-mail: [email protected]. Located on the grounds of Terre Haute South Vigo High School, Allen Memorial Planetarium is open only when public schools are in session. Public shows are conducted near Christmas, in the spring and in the fall. Visitors are welcome for other showings, when room is available. Call for availability.

Dobbs Park Nature Center - 5170 E. Poplar Drive. (812) 877-1095. Visitors can consult a naturalist, observe wildlife or take a hike in this park's 105-acre wooded setting. Educational programs are offered throughout the year. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday; 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday. Free admission.

Eugene V. Debs Museum - 451 N. Eighth Street. (812) 232-2163. Renowned labor leader, writer and humanitarian Eugene V. Debs was born in Terre Haute. His Midwestern-Victorian architecture home, built in 1890, is an official Indiana landmark and a Registered National Historic Home. The museum, which opened in the 1960s, is open from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and by appointment. Free admission.

Paul Dresser Memorial Birthplace - First Street and Dresser Drive. (812) 235-9717. This pre-Civil War home of Paul Dresser was relocated to Fairbanks Park, on the banks of the Wabash, from its original 318 S. Second Street location. Dresser, who wrote Indiana's state song, "On the Banks of the Wabash," was the brother of author Theodore Dreiser. Open 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, mid-May through September. Groups may visit by appointment. Free admission.

Farrington's Grove Historic Residential District Tour - Poplar Street to Hulman Street and Fourth Street to Seventh Street. Farrington's Grove, a 19th century neighborhood with about 800 homes and other buildings, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architectural styles include classical Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Italian Renaissance and Victorian. Selected homes are open to the public during a Christmas tour each December. Fowler Park Pioneer Village - Fowler Park. (812) 462-3391. Step into the past at this 1840s-era village, complete with 16 structures. These structures include homes, shops, a barn, church and a working grist mill. The barn, which houses a gift shop, also is available for rental. During the park's annual Pioneer Days, visitors can watch costumed pioneers demonstrate the crafts of the era - wool spinning, rail splitting, candle making, carpentry, soap making and more. The festival takes place the first full weekend in October. (For directions to Fowler Park, see 'camping' listings) Open most weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day; open other times by appointment. Free admission.

Hook Astronomical Observatory - Sixth and Chestnut Streets. (812) 237-3294 (during observation hours). E-mail: [email protected]. Web site: mama.indstate.edu@users/jchook/astro/index.html. The public is invited to check out the stats and planets, when weather permits, from the Indiana State University Hook Observatory. To reach the observatory, enter the front door of the Science Building and climb the stairs to the roof. The Science Building is just east of Hulman Memorial Student Union. Open 8 to 10 p.m., Tuesday and Friday (weather permitting). Free admission.

Indiana Theatre - 683 Ohio Street. (812) 232-8076. This Terre Haute landmark dates back to 1922. Of the original 200 theaters nationwide, it is one of seven remaining that was designed by renowned architect John Eberson. Visitors can see a movie at the theater seven days of the week; also, live performance events are occasionally featured. Visit America's largest living coral reef display and saltwater fish hatchery. Learn about conservation and preservation of coral reef and fish. The facility includes a classroom for educational programs, a retail store and gift shop. Open noon to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m., Sunday. The coral reef showroom is open during business hours. Guided tours of the production facility are offered on weekends. Admission for tours is $5 for adults and $3 for children and senior citizens. Please call to verify tour times. Visitors may browse at no charge.

Providence Center - Campus of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN. (812) 535-4193. The Sisters of Providence were pioneers in the Wabash Valley and have been a continual beneficial presence since 1840. Make a pilgrimage to Providence Center, the welcome center for the Sisters of Providence and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Take a walking tour; stay for Sunday brunch or attend a Liturgy at the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The center houses the National Shrine of Our Lady of Providence, the beautiful O-Shaughnessy Dining Room, the Heritage Museum, a gift shop, a series of dioramas telling the story of Sisters of Providence, and more. Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

Scottish Rite Temple/Hippodrome Theatre - 727 Ohio Street. (812) 234-3761. John Eberson built the Hippodrome Theatre in 1914 as a vaudeville theater. These days, the former Hippodrome houses a Masonic Museum and library, with items dating back to the Civil War. Open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Group tours available.
