Marion County
US 40 is Washington Street in Indianapolis. The city has seen tremendous changes since it was designated as the new state capital in 1821. At that time it was basically a one-street town - Washington Street.
Downtown Indiapolis has gone through remarkable changes in the past few years. The Indiana Historical Societys Headquarters recently got a new home just north of Washington Street. This beautiful building is located along the historic Central Canal, and is a great resource for learning about Indiana history.
The Circle Center Mall

Today Washington Street bustles with activity. The Circle Center Mall, seen here, is an upscale shopping mecca on Washington Street in downtown Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens is on the west side of Indianapolis on Washington Street, and is considered one of the countrys nicest zoos. It is the only one in the country to be accredited as a zoological park, botanical garden and aquarium.
