Indiana Wineries
special thanks to Sally Peart of the Indiana Wine Grape Council

You may not immediately think of Indiana when you think of the world's great wine regions, but maybe someday you will. Indiana currently has 19 wineries up and running and four more that are in the process of building. There are also several more in various stages of development. In 1999, 180,000 gallons of Indiana wine were sold — which was a 15% increase over the previous year.

Though there is a lot of recent growth in the industry, wine making in Indiana is not a recent phenomena. The first successful commercial winery in the nation was in Vevay (Switzerland County) in 1802. Furthermore, the first book on growing grapes under American soil was written by John James Dufour, a Swiss vine-dresser from Indiana.

After such a strong start however, in modern times wineries were not allowed to sell to the public until the Small Winery Act of 1971. But now our wine industry is up and running. Indiana wineries participate in tastings all over the country. The third largest International wine competition in the country is held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The Indy International brings in over 2,300 entries from 14 countries. Indiana wineries had an incredible showing against the top wines in the world — claiming 121 medals out of 191 wines entered.

Hoosier wineries produce all varieties of wines from native grapes, french hybrids and even vinifera grapes. So whether your taste is for a fruity concord wine or you prefer a dry cabernet sauvignon, there's an Indiana-made wine to suit your palate.

Most of Indiana's wineries are in Southern Indiana and we visited three of these to give you a closer look. Just click on the name of the winery below for a closer look.
