Best Pizza

Songer’s Gaslight Restaurant, Huntingburg - “We cook for our people”, says Joe Songer. While Songer's Gaslight was voted “best pizza”, they prefer to call what they serve “pies”. “We don’t make a regular pizza with a few sprinkles here and there”, and while you might not see the difference in their pizzas, “if you pick it up you’ll feel it. We go by weight. We make sure you get your money’s worth!” The restaurant has been in the Songer family for 30 years, and they’ve been making pizza pies “the same way we were shown 30 years ago. We use all fresh ingredients and the best pizza sauce in the world.” The Gaslight is one of the oldest businesses on the main street in Huntingburg. They’ve been serving the same families for two, three or four generations. It is such a favorite that they’ve shipped pizzas to Dallas, New York, Colorado and Florida. In fact, they were recently asked by a customer to ship pizza to Florida for his daughter’s 25th birthday! Specialty pizzas have been popular with diners, including

Maurizio’s Pizza, Terre Haute - “The 747 is the greatest!” says a reader, and indeed, Maurizio’s is known as the “Home of the Jumbo 747”, a 20” pizza with your choice of toppings. “We use lots of toppings and we don’t skimp on anything”, a manager tells us. Maurizio’s has been in business in Terre Haute since 1972. “We always said we’d go for quality, not quantity.” Another thing that makes Maurizio’s Pizza a favorite is that they make their pizzas from scratch: they make their own dough, their own sauce, and their own sausage. Stop in hungry at either of the two locations in Terre Haute, 2940 Wabash Ave (812-232-7570) or 5035 Lafayette (812-466-9645).

Roxano’s, Vevay - Roxano’s offers delicious pizza as well as pastas with homemade sauces all at very reasonable prices. Their pizzas are available with 20 different toppings, and the breadsticks are superb. Located at 211 Ferry Street. 812-427-2616.

Snappy Tomato, Columbus - There are three Snappy Tomatoes in Columbus. These favorite pizza places makes their own dough and have their own special sauce recipe, but the manager tells us, “Our people make it special.” They offer five specialty pizzas including a desert pizza, and “The Beast” which is name-your-own toppings on a six-pound pizza with 24 slices. Snappy Tomato locations in Columbus are at 3131 25th Street (812-372-2300), at the Commons Mall (812-378-4878) or on US 31 (812-526-0101).

Some Guys Pizza, Indianapolis - Keith and Nancy Carey started Some Guys 11 years ago on Allisonville Road in Indianapolis. They serve pizzas, pastas, salads and sandwiches with a leaning toward the gourmet style pizza and pastas. They have both a wood-burning and regular pizza oven, and make all their own dough, grate their own cheese and make all their own sauces. “We do everything here on the premises and we’ve done that from day one,” says Keith. One of their popular gourmet pizzas is the barbecue chicken pizza which starts with smoked chicken which is then barbecued. Barbecue sauce is used instead of tomato sauce, and it is topped with red onions, smoked gouda, and mozzarella cheese. Another popular pizza has been the Greek pizza, which is topped with spinach, roma tomatoes, collimate olives, red onions and feta cheese. Each night they offer a special, one being a wild mushroom jumbo ravioli in a sun-dried tomato cream sauce topped with mozzarella cheese and baked in the wood oven. Homemade lasagna is served the first weekend of every month, and this is always a crowd-pleaser. Some Guys is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday-Friday and Dinner on weekends. Closed Mondays. 6235 Allisonville Road. (317) 257-1364.

One reader answered, “My house!” Others specified they liked the Pizza Inn of Brazil, Pizza King in Greensburg, and Arni’s Pizza King on State Street in New Albany.

Other nominations were Chicago Pizza, Pizza Hut, and Noble Roman’s for making the “best personal pan pizza” says one reader. “Good for the individual with the munchies from a hard day of activities.”
