Lawrence County, Indiana

Visitors to Lawrence County are intrigued by the limestone mills and the deep quarry cuts. Notable is the Empire Quarry where stone for New York City's Empire State Building was excavated in 1930. The use of limestone in skyscrapers was proven with this building.

Many are surprised to learn the Tribune Tower and Merchandise Mart, both in Chicago, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Radio City-Rockerfeller Center buildings of New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. are all built of Lawrence County limestone.
