Back in 1972 Dr. Donald Shumrick and his family planted their first grapes. Back then it was just two acres of French-American hybrid grapes. Today he has 70 acres of his own plus he leases 48 more acres that will be in full production this fall. They currently grow 11 varieties of grapes and all of their wines are made from their own grapes.
In addition to the winery, they also have a wonderful restaurant offering homemade favorites like steak, pork tenderloin or "Indiana's most famous BBQ ribs and chicken." The actual building is a reconstructed 100 year old timbered barn which features two stone fireplaces. I was told that one of these fireplaces is the largest stone fireplace in Indiana.
 Dr. Shumrick says that his only winemaking experience prior to Chateau Pomije was when he and some friends would buy some grapes and make wine when he was in college. He says that this current endeavor started because he has nine kids and planting grapes was a good way to keep them occupied. As much time as running the vineyards, winery and restaurant must take, Dr. Shumrick still has his medical practice in nearby Cincinnati and is also a member of the faculty at the University of Cincinnati. He also has another restaurant, wine store and wine bar in Obrienville which is a suburb of Cincinnati.
Out of the 11 wines produced at Chateau Pomije they have already sold out of a few but their Pinot Noir, Pinot Chardonnay, Johannisberger Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Domaine Reserve, Late Harvest Riesling and Late Harvest Concord are still available at the winery as well as area Kroger stores and other outlets.
Dr. Shumrick mentioned that they do a very active private label business for companies and organizations wanting to serve "their own" label. They have also sold grapes and wines to other wineries. If you have found some of their wines that you like but can't make the trip to Guilford they can make arrangements to ship to you - out of state orders are of course dependent on state laws.
The restaurant and vineyards provide a beautiful setting for dining or just tasting the wines and there are still reservations available (as of the writing of this article) for Valentine's Day. They even have a Valentine's Special just for the occasion.
