Old-Fashioned Hometown Antique Farm Equipment Show and Spring Parade, May 5th and 6th, Brown County

One of the first things that strikes you when you see a listing of all the activities surrounding the Brown County Antique Farm Machinery Show and the annual spring parade is the multi-generational aspect of it. There is, literally something to interest every member of the family - from grandparents to little ones.

And then there’s the feeling of nostalgia it evokes - bringing forth memories of the small hometown we all believe we actually remember.

While the spring parade has been in existence for almost 40 years, the Antique Farm Machinery Show was formally organized about a dozen years ago. Since the, the two have provided an entire weekend full of old-fashioned, down-home, good-neighborly fun and celebration that’s reminiscent of a kinder, more hospitable place and time.

Here’s a sampling of events planned to date:

  • Spring Blossom Parade - through downtown Nashville at 11am on Saturday, featuring many vintage tractors and farm equipment, local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, fire engines, clowns, etc.
  • Antique Tractor and Farm Machinery Show - hosting about 125 vintage tractors, an old shingle mill, a stationary hay press, a stem-powered sawmill, and many others.
  • A variety of children’s activities such as a sack race, an egg carrying race, a corn shelling contest (by hand and/or with an antique sheller), a pedal and/or sled pull, a straw search which will have kids searching for block “coins” hidden in piles of straw.
  • Bean dinner - mouth-watering beans slow-cooked all day in cast iron kettles over an open fire, along side slices of ham and corn bread.
  • Rail splitting demonstrations - where rails are split and put up for sale as fencing material.
  • Music, from country to bluegrass to gospel.
  • Also a craft show, fleamarket, and an interdenominational Christian church service at 8:30 Sunday morning.

All proceeds from the event benefit “someone in the community who needs the help.” As an example, one year a local young adult who was injured when a tree fell on him received the money for needed surgery. The balance of the proceeds are used to benefit the Brown County fairgrounds. The Antique Tractor and Farm Machinery Show is sponsored each year by the association founded by two local men in 1989. Members have to be 70 years of age and have had five or more years of involvement with the association before they are considered for membership. Consider yourself invited to the show!

Nashville, Indiana is an historic artist colony village, easily accessible via major interstate highways and features over 350 art, craft, antique and specialty shops and restaurants. The town is adjacent to beautiful Brown County State Park, Indiana’s largest state park. For information call 800-753-3255.
