Travels along the Ohio River Scenic Route: One of Indiana’s National Scenic Byways

If you have spent any time driving the back roads of Southern Indiana, you already know that virtually every county has picturesque scenery to offer the weekend traveler. But only two Indiana drives have been distinguished by the National Transportation Department as National Scenic Byways. These are the “Ohio River Scenic Route” and “The National Road”, or U.S. 40.

SouthernIN.com spent two days in October touring Indiana’s southern border along the Ohio River Scenic Byway. We were struck not only by the spectacular views along the route, but by the vast number of attractions to explore along the way. We visited several, and found there is truly something for everyone, whatever your interest.

It’s possible to make this 303 mile drive in just one day, and the drive itself would be worth the trip. But if you enjoy stopping and exploring, plan to spend a couple days. Each county can provide valuable information, so be sure to check out the individual “County Pages” before you go.

To make “downloading” faster, we have tried to limit the number of photos for this article. But if you want to get a closer look at any destination, just click on the magnifying glass icon for more background and photos.

Enjoy the ride!
