Posey County

Our Ohio River Scenic Route trip starts along the western border of Indiana, on State Road 62, in Posey County. This county is bordered by the Wabash River to the west, and the Ohio River to the south. Following this route, you will pass through the county seat, Mount Vernon. If you take a short detour North, you can also visit historic New Harmony. This town was founded as a spiritual sanctuary, and attracted gifted scientists, scholars and artists who sought a “Utopian” society through communal living. Today, it is showcased as one of “The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America” by John Villani in his book.

A short drive south of the Scenic Route will take you Hovey Lake’s 4,300-acre wetlands and Twin Swamps Nature Preserve, where one can see rare Indiana cypress swamps. <see our Posey County pages>
