Vanderburgh County (Evansville)

Back onto 62, you soon come to Vanderburgh County, with the city of Evansville on the banks of the Ohio. This city offers beautiful architecture, from the Williard Library - the oldest public library building in Indiana, to the Old Courthouse Center and old jail, the Mesker Park Zoo, Wesselman Woods Nature Preserves, and if gambling’s your game, you can even visit Casino Aztar.<click to see more>

Angel Mounds State Historic Site

After heading east out of Evansville you will soon come to Angel Mounds State Historic Site, one of the finest prehistoric Native American settlements of Mississippian mound builders in the U.S. Here you can roam the grounds and see 11 earthen mounds, reconstructed residential areas, and learn about this fascinating area where 1,000 to 3,000 people lived from 900 to 1,200 A.D. <see our Vanderburgh County pages> or <click to see more>

Our trip continues east into Warrick County, and through historic Newburgh on Rte. 662. This pretty little town is right on the banks of the Ohio and was settled in 1803. The two-lane road winds through town with its well-cared-for shops, and a downtown area that is a nationally registered historic area. Just outside town you will see the old dam, and a historic log cabin which is used for lectures, study groups, and festival events. <see our Warrick County pages>
